New Mexico Walkabout

by Kate on July 30, 2011

The Rio Grande Gorge

Long time no post but I promise it’s for a muy bueno reason. I’ve been adventuring in the Southwest with my crafty partner in crime, GuppyAl of the Cheddar Guppies. We’ve been soaking it up at Ojo Caliente, cruising the beautiful landscape and hiking with llamas. Taos has two great little fabric stores and more art than you can shake a churro at. We’re recharging, eating everything and discussing all of the things we want to make and sew. Here is GuppyAl driving our desert mobile.

And no, I couldn’t fit my sewing machine in my carry-on. I did bring the next best thing though: the Country Cool Sublime Stitching embroidery pattern. Add some rocking chairs + chili flavored chocolate and you have yourself a sweet little afternoon. Stay tuned for the finished project!

Dewberry Diaper Pouches

by Kate on July 25, 2011

I named these the Dewberry Diaper Pouches because of my use (over-use and abuse?) of Joel Dewberry’s woodgrain fabric. I cannot help myself and I doubt I’m the only one. Its such a versatile motif and perfect for baby boy gifts (and for girls too, let’s face it).

We recently welcomed 3 new gentlemen into our circle of friends: Celio, Max and Freeman. All born within 2 weeks of one another. I wanted to give the mamas something useful that they likely did not have yet. I know I used the heck out of my diaper keeper and Anna over at Noodlehead wrote this easy-tastic (just made that up) Diaper Pouch Tutorial. Thank you, Anna! The pouches were a cinch to make and fun too. Each one holds about 6 diapers, a pack of travel wipes and a tube of bum cream.

And the Winner is…

by Kate on July 17, 2011

…Nicole Kleemann of Doting on Dierdre! Congratulations, Nicole. She said, “the cutest thing I have made are my rainbow wooden toadstools for my daughter. They’re super cute and easy too!”. She is telling us the truth. I saw on them on her blog and I can verify their cuteness. Thank you to everyone who commented, tweeted, blogged and posted on this giveaway :-)

Dear Mr. Postman

by Kate on July 13, 2011

Please try not to be too excited over my adorable felt envelopes. You might drop your junk mail! These envelopes contain ladybug secrets and hedgehog burps. They should be carried gently to the place where rainbow sprinkles are made.

Three cheers for Aranzi and her wee envelope pattern! This is the easiest of her projects, IMHO. Some very quick stitching on the machine + a little bit of glueing and an eentsy amount of embroidery. You could assembly-line a whole batch of envelopes in no time. I have a feeling I’ll be going back Aranzi’s book again and again.

You can still enter the Cute Stuff Giveaway until 10pm PST tonight.

Lock. It. Up.

by Kate on July 9, 2011

Does it get cuter than key rings with faces? Probably not. I made Mr. Key and Mr. Building so that I never misplace my keys again. Just kidding. I’ll still misplace them at least twice a day! Arg! These guys are easy to make and easy to love. Easy key ring lovin’.

I really appreciate Aranzi’s succinct and visual instructions. Enter for a chance to win her book.

World’s Tiniest Project

by Kate on July 8, 2011

“Oh sure, these hair bands are soooo tiny. No sweat. I’ll just make them in 5 minutes, dust my hands off and kiss my biceps.” That was me before I started making them according to Aranzi Aronzo’s pattern. Sewing and embroidering bitsy creatures is harder than it looks. Each one of their heads is smaller than a quarter and I had to use tweezers to place and glue the bear face and eyes. My embroidery needle was too large and the french knot for the nose & eyes kept popping through the back of the felt. Oy! Now you understand why my bunny looks deranged and mister bear has a rough eye. Felt is not so forgiving after you’ve stabbed it in the same spot 10 times. All of that said, I’m still loving them. I just need more practice. Plus there are squirrel and panda versions that I MUST make. It is imperative.

They also make cute finger puppets.

Gesundheit

by Kate on July 7, 2011

If you don’t think this is cute then you need to get your cute-dar checked. Pronto. Aranzi Aronzi brought the fun with her cute tissue case patterns. I brought the enthusiasm and managed to cut off part of my finger with the embroidery scissors. Well that was dramatic. I actually just snipped off a little skin and had to wear a Spongebob bandaid. But seriously! I love these tissue guys.

Peekaboo!

These were painfully simple and I had a good time making them. You could too! Don’t forget to enter the Cute Stuff Giveaway. You cutie pie :)

Star Spangled Shirt

by Kate on July 4, 2011

Last night I made this quickie applique shirt for Stella. Girl’s gotta feel festive on the 4th. Amiright? I grabbed some star clip art on the interwebs and resized it in Photoshop to make 3 different star templates. I used a little bit of Steam-A-Seam to iron the fabric stars on the tee. Then I machine stitched around the edges with robin’s egg blue and red threads. Bam! Red, white and beautiful.

Fireworks face:

Happy 4th of July!!
