InspiRED

by Kate on June 28, 2011

I’m feelin’ red like a firecracker this week. Throw some tube steaks on the glowing BBQ. Spicy cocktail in one hand, lit sparkler in the other. The heat of the day barely fades before fiery bursts of color scorch the summer night sky. Get reddy for red. {all images link to source pages}

The Skirt Finale

by Kate on June 26, 2011

Is it the last day of the Summer Skirt Challenge already? I’ve had so much fun sewing with you and seeing what you’ve made. I also love hearing the back stories and details around your projects. Speaking of which, the skirt above was upcycled for Stella. I cut up an old Anthropologie skirt (gasp!). It was a little hard to do but the skirt seldom left my closet. And now it’s Stella’s fave skirt. It’s the circle of life! {Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Sir Elton John}

Beth of Sew Anyhow whipped up these skirts using Fabritopia’s Edith Skirt pattern. She said that her daughter loves their twirliness! Who wouldn’t, Beth? Who wouldn’t?

Tiffany made this sweet little dress. She said, ” …the dress is from Anna Maria Horner’s book, Handmade Beginnings ….well the top is. The skirt I changed a bit. The original Pattern is called “Pretty as a Picture” where you can add a square of “fancy” fabric to the middle of a solid dress. I have used this pattern several times because it is so easy and looks so nice. I even painted the “picture” of one dress.”

Tiffany went off, actually. She upcycled skirt from a blouse AND made a cute diaper cover. Where does she get the energy? I’ll have what she’s having! Tiffany said, “The diaper is the Classic RRP (Rita’s Rump Pocket) pattern. best fit I have found. supper trim and cute. I added the velcro to the pattern. I am buying a serger some time this week just to make more of these suckers. She(Rita?) is happy to share her pattern for free and happy for you to sell diapers from her pattern.”

Update: Tiffany sent yet another pic of an amazing up-cycled dress. She made this in the course of one evening. Bravo!

Amber wins the Cool Mom award for her Fancy Nancy combo. She said, “Here is my Fancy Nancy skirt and bag set I made for my 2 year old. She thinks she is Fancy Nancy so this is very loved…she kept pointing to Fancy Nancy screaming, ‘Me! Me!’”. Amber, you’re just so….what’s the word I’m looking for? Oh yes. Fancy.

THANK YOU to everybody who contributed and commented. I hope this was fun for you! I certainly lurved it and Stella got to have more candy than usual.

Don’t wait for the next challenge to share what you’ve made. I want to see it!

“No Dum Dum” Skirt

by Kate on June 25, 2011

We went sans Dum Dum today. Maybe it was because Mama finally made a skirt with pink cupcakes on it. Can you tell Stella was in the mood to peacock?

I made this little confection using the Tea Party Skirt pattern from Owl Baby. Soooo simple to make this skirt. And yes, the fabric is from Bobbin’s Nest as well. If you live in the Bay Area you need to stop by the Nest. Ps. they are rearranging the store and getting a bumload more fabric this summer.

Raise your hand if you love the Summer Skirt Challenge! Now high-five me. Now do a cartwheel. Now spank yourself if you haven’t sent me a skirt photo.

One more day left to show off! Shoot your skirt pics to kate{at}peepthread{dot}com.

And the Winner is…

by Kate on June 25, 2011

Congratulations to Jules! She won the copy of Sew Serendipity by Kay Whitt. Jules said, “I think these skirts featured in the book are so cute, I never see anything like that at the store. I hate trying to take a pattern and trying to blow it up over and over to try to get something workable, just frustrates me and it becomes another UFO delegated to the great tote… lol”. Just say NO to UFO’s, Jules! We’d love to see what you make from this book.

Thank you to everyone who commented, tweeted, blogged and posted! Will there be a giveaway next week? Does a bear craft in the woods? {That’s my new signature sign-off, in case you were wondering}

Skirt Alert

by Kate on June 23, 2011

It’s raining skirts. Suzi G. made these adorable ruffly numbers (above and below). She says, “These skirts are made from a pattern from 1986! I made a denim skirt for my daughter when she was 2 and it was her favorite! Now, I made the plaid one for my 2 year old granddaughter for Christmas … she loves it so much that I decided to make her a floral one this week :) It will be a surprise for when they get home from vacation!”. Who’s gonna be the most popular grandma in the world? Miss Suzi G., that’s who.

My favorite sewing Texan made this peach & blue southern charmer for her niece. Nicely done, Ashli!

Here comes that Auntie FaFa again. She is a sewing robot, no? Loving these matching skirts she made for her sister and niece. Domo arigato for sharing, Auntie F!

The Summer Skirt Challenge is still going strong. Sew a skirt + Send a picture to me = Your skirt on PeepThread. Peepskirt party!

Bandana Skirts

by Kate on June 23, 2011

My SIL (sister-in-law) strikes again! Jenn made these adorable skirts out of bandanas. I was surprised to learn that it only takes one bandana to make each skirt. No, I won’t get out of town. YOU get out of town.

Happy Baby Designs has a simple Bandana Skirt Tutorial if you’d like to make your own.

Thanks for sewing along, Jenn!

El Gato Negro

by Kate on June 23, 2011

“I do not want my picture taken. You have angered me.”

“You have stolen my soul with your camera. I am deeply saddened.”

“I am fleeing! I will become an emancipated minor!”

I had to work hard for some smiles today. The Gato Negro skirt is my favoritest so far. It was very easy and fun to make using the Double Dutch PDF pattern from Owl Baby. What can I say? I’m an Owl Baby fan. I’m also a Tammis Keefe fan – the cat fabric is a ’50s repro print that I picked up at Bobbin’s Nest.

Ps. the Dum Dum was rootbeer flavored today.

Don’t forget to enter the Sew Serendipity Giveaway. Only one day left!

Sew Daddy Sew

by Kate on June 21, 2011

I was in the first grade with Mike. Like most other boys at that time, he was jumping off of high objects, throwing tan bark and wearing sweet polo shirts (a la Ricky Schroeder). He had a bowl haircut because it was cool and rad and awesome. Mike ate questionable tater tots and square pizza like the rest of us at K.I. Jones. He also bore a striking resemblance to this little girl:

Fast-forward 28 years into present time and meet Mike Adamick, a doting stay-at-home dad and talented writer. He is well-known by parents in the Bay Area for his contributions to the SF Chronicle, Jezebel.com and his blog, Cry It Out. The blond sprite hanging from the scaffolding is his daughter, Miss Emmeline. Work it, girl.

Can Mike sew? Ha! Not only can he sew, he gets many of his materials from thrift stores. These are just a few of the fantastic outfits Mike has designed for Emme. Eat your heart out, Molly Ringwald!

Jump over to Cry It Out if you want to see more of Mike’s designs. His wife sews too! I wonder if they fight over who gets to use the cutting mat. And I wonder if he still throws tan bark.

Thanks for contributing to the Summer Skirt Challenge, Mike.

The Bicycle Skirt

by Kate on June 21, 2011

I did it again and I’m not sorry. I bribed her with another Dum Dum (lime), and we both won. I whipped this lil’ skirt together today. I call it the Bicycle Skirt because of the tiny bicycle wheels on the white fabric. I know, I’m wildly creative. I snapped both fabrics up at Bobbin’s Nest recently and dammit I love that fabric store. The skirt took me all afternoon due to many interruptions from my skirt model. They were generally adorable interruptions except the last one where she coated the front of her hair with with a Lip Smacker. Hence the blue bow holding the waxy, bubble gum scented hair off of her face. I digress. This skirt is very much like the one I made yesterday excepting the strip of wheel fabric on the bottom hem and the pocket. I figure she can wear it on the 4th of July and fill that pocket with bottle rockets and matches. I kid! I kid! :)

Got a skirt to show off? Own it! Made something else cute? Bring it! We want to see it all.
